The vegan leather alternative made from the leaves of the pineapple plant – PiƱatex

PiƱatex is a natural, non-woven material made from pineapple leaf fibres, which is used as an alternative to leather and petroleum-based textiles. Only pineapple leaf fibre, which is a by-product of the agricultural industry, is used in production. No additional land, water or pesticides are needed to produce the raw material.

The journey of PiƱatex begins in the Philippines. Here the leaves of the pineapple plant are collected and further processed so that a non-woven substrate can be extracted from the fibres.

Worldwide pineapple farming generates about 13 million tonnes of vegetable waste annually. With the waste from the 10 largest pineapple-growing countries alone, it would already be possible to replace 50% of the world’s traditional leather production without planting a single pineapple.
